C'mon Mort! Production: Short Film "II"

Hi everyone! I am so excited about this blog! I just completed a really cool project over the weekend and I’m still riding the waves of excitement. I provided flowers for a C’mon Mort! Productions short film called “II” (pronounced “two”), which follows a bride and her parents behind-the-scenes during the moments before the wedding and uses contemporary ballet to explore the relationship of the parents and their enduring love story.

Guess who played the parents?! Award-winning ballerina Evelyn Hart and dancer and guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, Rex Harrington. When they arrived on location I was completely star struck and I have to admit, a little nervous, but they were so friendly and gracious...I knew it was going to be an amazing day.

It was my first time being on a set and I felt like I was in Hollywood…cameras, lights, actors changing into costumes, make-up artists adding final touches before the next take, the Director saying that ever so famous line…aaand action! I had so much fun and felt so priveledged to be amongst such great talent.

My favorite part of the day was watching Evelyn and Rex dance. They hadn’t danced together in 5 years, so this project created a reunion of extraordinary talent. The chemistry between them was so natural and genuine and every movement was perfectly synchronized and so effortlessly executed. We were watching ballet at it’s best…it was magic…simply magic.

Posted is a picture my photographer took so you can see the pieces I created for the film.

That’s a wrap!

International Women's Day

When CultureLink asked if I would participate in their celebration of the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, I was quite honoured and delighted to be providing the flowers and attending the event. Little did I realize the magnitude of what I had committed to. When 120 women get together in one room to celebrate being women, it is awe-inspiring. This multicultural event included dancing (Capoeira, Persian and contemporary), poets, success stories and the keynote speaker was Hon. Jean Augustine, Ontario Office of Fairness Commissioner (the woman on the left in the photo). I have never attended such a powerful event. I left feeling strengthened, determined, supported and proud to be a woman. It doesn’t get better than that!

St. Lucia Learning Project

The St Lucia Learning Project provides enriched learning opportunities and hope for the future for the underprivileged rural children on the island of St. Lucia.

In support of this project, funds are raised through an annual concert and silent auction. My husband and I have attended for the past couple of years and it’s hard to describe how spectacular the evening is. Not only is it a “feel good” event with everyone coming together to help the children of St. Lucia, but the musical talent is incredible. This year, the performers were members of the Toronto cast of The Sound of Music and Jersey Boys and the special guest was Bravura, Canada’s leading baritone trio. The singing was magnificent.

I am proud to say CurlyGirl Flowers participated in the silent auction by donating a flower arrangement and gift certificate and we are looking forward to hearing from the winning bidder.

King Protea

I thought this was kinda cool. I’ve seen protea before but not this big! To provide you with some perspective, it is standing in a vase (not a water glass) and is 24 inches in height and 7 inches in diameter. Pretty awesome.  For those who are interested in a few facts:

The King Protea (also known as Giant Protea, Honeypot or King Sugar Bush) is the national flower of South Africa (distributed in the southwestern and southern parts of Africa).

The Protea flower symbolizes courage and diversity and because they come in a wide variety of sizes, textures, shapes and colours, they represent transformation and change.

Protea flowers are self-pollinating. They have both the male and female reproductive organs on the same flower.

The King Protea is adapted to survive fires by it’s thick underground stem, which contains many dormant buds; these will produce new growth after a fire.

Welcome to CurlyGirl Flowers!

Hi everyone! This is my first blog so let me start by welcoming you to the website and enjoy your visit.

Today I was in heaven…well…it’s my version of heaven. Pacific Circle in Mississauga is filled with warehouses full of fresh flowers and hard goods for any event you can think of. Imagine walking into a fridge filled with flowers, only the fridge is four times the size of your living room…I would sleep in one if freezing wasn’t an issue. Unfortunately, these warehouses aren’t open to the public, but if you have the opportunity to go with someone who is registered, I highly recommend it.

The reason for my visit was because I am preparing for two charity events taking place next week. One is in support of the St. Lucia Learning Project (go to www.stlucialearningproject.ca for details regarding the “Sugar and Spice” concert on March 7th) and the other is in support of International Women’s Day. I am attending both events so come back to find out how each night went.

See you soon!
